The Year 10 Outdoor education course provides an indication of the requirements for Year 11 and Year 12 Outdoor Education and focuses on practical context such as;
- Roping (Abseiling and Rockclimbing);
- Mountain Biking;
- Kayaking;
- Campcraft; and
- Orienteering
Furthermore the theory components within the course cover EVERY other curriculum area in the school and this is what makes Outdoor Education so valuable for any student’s future career aspirations and skill set.
Theory topics include;
- Environmental Awareness;
- Sustainability;
- Weather components and understanding weather systems;
- Navigation;
- Leadership Development;
- Group Dynamics; and
- Expedition Planning
Students will participate in a flexible program that includes use of brand new facilities and equipment with the most current safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards applied. All contexts (activities) contain some form of controlled risk in order to maximise opportunities for students to be their best.
Students are expected to be available for one major expedition (approximately four days) in the latter part of the year as well as a possible ‘overnight introduction to camping’ earlier in the year.
Please note that in order to prepare our Outdoor Education students for the rigors of Year 11 and Year 12 Outdoor Education, the course is 50% practical and 50% theory.
