Year 9 German builds on what students have learnt in Year 8. The highlight of Year 9 German will be a film project about a holiday destination. Topics range from travel and transport to learning about various celebrations. Students will get the chance to converse in German, using the phrases studied in class. Classes will also have many opportunities to express themselves creatively in projects throughout the year.
When choosing subjects in high school, you might consider the following:
- There are two pathways in upper school for German, the General and the ATAR pathway. Selecting a language as an ATAR subject adds 10% on top of your university entrance score.
- The possibility of being part of the SAGSE Exchange program. Student could spend two months in Germany, go to a German school and come back fluent in a second language.
Lastly, this is what a past student of German has said:
“Personally, since I like learning German, the classes have made me progress in language skills from not knowing anything in German at the start of Year 7 to now being able to construct more complex sentences and being able to understand German conversations more easily. I think that it is an amazing thing to be able to know nothing before and then actually being able to communicate in that language now. Basically, I can communicate in another language than English which is pretty cool. Academically, learning German at school has been beneficial to my ATAR especially since I enjoy learning German and therefore spend more time on the subject.”
If you have any questions about choosing German for next year, please do not hesitate to contact the Languages Department at the College.
